[ The Symptom
"We operate retail stores across the US and Canada. During an internet outage, our Vancouver store processed several debit card sales offline. Every single Canadian debit card declined once we got back online, and our bank told us they are completely uncollectible."
[ The Reality & Truth
The Layman's Reality
Canadian debit cards (Interac) are physically and legally incapable of processing offline. Any attempt to swipe or tap an Interac card without an active internet connection will result in a 100% loss for your business because the Canadian banking network requires real-time, bidirectional security handshakes.
The Technical Truth
The Interac debit network is structurally built around real-time cryptographic validation using Message Authentication Codes (MAC). During a transaction, the terminal’s secure hardware must calculate and exchange unique digital signatures in real-time with the issuing bank’s host processor. Because this bidirectional cryptographic verification cannot happen asynchronously, Interac processing rules completely forbid offline, signature, or card-not-present debit processing.
[ The VALZOX Intercept
Our terminal software features an automated, localized BIN-range lookup. The moment a card is presented, the system checks if it belongs to the Canadian Interac debit network. If it does, the terminal instantly blocks offline processing and prompts the consumer for an alternative offline-eligible credit card or cash, stopping the uncollectible liability before it enters your queue.
